Covid-19 and Food Waste

Recently, the Food Industry Association published a blog post entitled, “Food Waste During Covid-19.” In it, they explain the current state of food waste in America in light of this pandemic.

Since many people are working from home, there is increased experimentation in food shopping and cooking. A lot of Americans are trying to limit their public exposure and as a result, they have saved time in grocery shopping, and have reduced their food waste.

According to the post, “65% of those…surveyed are concerned about shortages of entire food categories or shortages of specific brands(,) flavors or sizes.”

Interestingly, 37% of grocery shoppers have been successful in reducing their food waste, whereas 8% have not been, with the rest being unknown.

Now, more than ever, it is important for us to reduce food waste, “(s)ince estimates say 25% to 40% of food grown, processed and transported in the U.S. will never be consumed and that this current COVID-19 environment has only exacerbated the gaps in the systems connecting food from farm to fork…”
