Food Safety Focus | Cell Based Meat

Food Safety Focus

Hello All!

I hope this message finds all of you and your families safe and happy.

On the subject of innovative ideas, this week I have another one that is already happening right here in the United States. Believer Meats is building a 200,000 square foot facility in Wilson, North Carolina that will produce meat products that are cell based. What does that mean? Let us see!

To replace the need to have acres and acres of chicken and cattle farms, companies have been growing meat from animal cells. Advocates for this new way of “growing” meat and chicken products claim that by using this process, they eliminate the need for the processing of live animals for the food supply chain. They simply take a cell sample from the animal that causes no injury and “grow” the meat from the cell sample taken. In the past, this process was so costly that there was no practical way families could afford cell based meat products, however as more sites are built and process become more efficient, the cost of cell based meats is becoming more affordable.

According to the Good Food Institute, which promotes cell based alternatives to meat, chicken and seafood, more than 107 startups in 2021 focused on cell based products.

I’ve provided a link here for you to read more about this in Food Navigator:
