Food Safety Focus

Hello All!

I hope this message finds all of you and your families safe and well.

This food safety focus will focus on food safety in the home for the holidays.

Dough and batter made with flour or eggs can contain harmful germs, such as E. coli and Salmonella, so do not taste or eat raw dough or batter that is meant to be baked or cooked.  This includes dough or batter for cookies, cakes, pies, biscuits or crafts.  Do not let children taste raw dough or batter.  Some companies and stores offer edible cookie dough that uses heat-treated flour and pasteurized eggs or no eggs.  Read the label carefully to make sure the dough is meant to be eaten without baking or cooking.

After food is prepared, keep hot food hot and cold food cold and refrigerate or freeze any perishable food within 2 hours.  Bacteria can grow rapidly in the danger zone between 40°F and 140°F.

Wash your hands, but not your turkey, goose or chicken!  Many consumers think that washing their bird will remove bacteria and make it safer.  However, it’s virtually impossible to wash bacteria off.  Instead, juices that splash during washing can transfer bacteria onto the surfaces of your kitchen, other foods and utensils. This can cause cross-contamination, which can make you and your guests very sick.  Washing your hands before and after handling your poultry and its packaging is crucial to avoid spreading harmful bacteria.

Thanks for all you do every Day and I hope all of you have a wonderful and safe Christmas!
