Food Safety Focus | Apple Turnover Day

Hello All Team Members!

I hope this message finds all of you and your families safe and well,

Guess what day it is today! (Well if you said hump day then that was funny but not the answer I’m looking for). July 5th is National Apple Turnover Day! That’s right, those delicious little pastries have their own day and rightfully so. Let’s take a look at just how important the apple turnover has been in history and even see how the pastry may have saved an entire town…

Turnovers and the seemingly endless varieties of them have been around for many centuries in many cultures. From the empanadas of Spain to the samosas of India, they are easy to hold and downright delicious.

No one knows for sure who first came up with the apple turnover but legend has it that in 1630 in St. Calais in France, an epidemic had struck the town. In an effort to ease the suffering of the people, the Lady of the Town or the Chatelaine gave the townspeople apples and flour who then turned these simple ingredients into the apple turnover or chausson aux pommes. The town is still thriving today and credits the apple turnover with saving the town all those years ago. Each year to this day the apple turnover is celebrated in St. Calais during the medieval festival at the beginning of September. It is rumored that bakers of the town roll their ovens out into the streets during the festival and begin feeding people apple turnovers all day!

Sounds like my next vacation spot is already planned for me. I sincerely hope you enjoyed this story and can take some time later to enjoy an apple turnover or two and as always thank you for all you do to provide safe food for our families each and every Day!
