Food Safety Focus | Focus

Hello All Team Members!

I hope this message finds all of you and your families safe and well,

This week our food safety focus is on focus. Wait, what? Yes, that’s right – focus! Let’s take a look.

In these modern times it seems like it’s normal to be doing several things at one time. This is difficult and not recommended even if you know what you’re doing like the back of your hand, so to speak. The good thing about being familiar with what you’re doing is that your muscle memory can help you, even if you’re distracted for a moment. Your body sort of goes through the motions without much effort. But this simply isn’t the case for new team members who haven’t fully developed their muscle memory yet.

Since new team members are still trying to remember a lot of data, like forklift controls, pallet jack controls, turning radius, fork height, tilt, pallet condition and then also having to remember what they are there to do like picking this case, retrieving this pallet, locations, lot numbers, I’m freezing, where’s my lot number, somebody needs to get by, pedestrian traffic, etc. It can be overwhelming to say the least!

Something simple like, “is this the right product that is in my hands or on my forks right now” or “is what I’m doing safe” can get lost in the mix.

Most of our accidents as a company come from newer team members. We have to help them focus on one step at a time to build good muscle memory so they can have a strong foundation to build on. Just because someone is a quick learner doesn’t mean they need to be treated like a veteran. They are still building. If we help them grow properly, they will be able to handle more and more pressure if needed later on down the road. It doesn’t help us or them to have our quick learners taken by a simple miscalculation that could have been avoided if we recognized that they still needed time to grow.

Stay safe and as always, thank you for all of you do to provide safe food for our families, each and every Day!
