Food Safety Focus

Hello All Team Members!

I hope this message finds all of you and your families safe and well,

Today I would like to focus on a very important issue that affects a lot of people in the U.S. and
around the world each year – food poisoning. With all the food being shared by friends and family and with food being left out during parties a little longer than it should be, food poisoning happens a lot more than people may realize.

Symptoms can range from mild to severe to deadly depending on each case and the cause. About 600 million cases of food poisoning are reported around the world each year, with 48 million cases a year for the U.S. alone. That’s just the food poisoning cases that have been reported, the true number is significantly higher. How many of us can say we have been affected by food poisoning or know someone who has? Just about all of us for sure. Of the people in the U.S., there are around 128,000 hospitalizations and around 3,000 deaths reported each year.

Symptoms of food poisoning are often upset stomach, diarrhea, vomiting and nausea.

What can we do to help prevent this from happening? According to the CDC: Wash your hands and cooking surfaces thoroughly before, during and after preparing food. Remember to sanitize surfaces like the handle of the faucet in the kitchen, etc.

Separate and keep raw meats, poultry, seafood and eggs from ready to eat foods.

Cook foods to the correct internal temperatures to kill bacteria and use a food thermometer to check the inside. Trying to guess by visual inspection is wrong far too often to be reliable.

Make sure your refrigerator is set at 40 degrees F or below and refrigerate left over foods as quickly as possible. Never allow foods to sit out in room temperature more than 2 hours (unless your room is 40 degrees F or less!).

I hope all of you and your families have a wonderful and safe New Year and as always thank you so much for all you do each and every Day!
