Food Safety Focus | Gourmet Coffee Legend and History

Hello All Team Members!

I hope this message finds all of you and your families safe and well,

For all you gourmet coffee drinkers out there, Happy National Gourmet Coffee Day! Wait, what? There is a difference between gourmet coffee and regular coffee? Is it the sugar or the milk? Is it hot or cold? Well, some say it’s the bean! Gourmet coffee comes from 100% Arabica coffee beans and is considered to be of a higher quality as compared to the more common Robusta. Blends do exist though but how and where a coffee bean is grown and cultivated is an art in itself.

Coffee has some very interesting legends and history, to say the least. It has been said that coffee has changed nations and entire economies to become the second largest commodity to be traded in the world today. How many of us start off the day with a cup of coffee in one form or the other?

Historically, coffee comes from the plateaus of Ethiopia, in Eastern Africa. The proximity of Ethiopia to the Arabian Peninsula, allowed it to travel from there to Asia, Europe and later around the world.

Legend says that around 700 AD, a goatherder in Ethiopia named Kaldi noticed his goats acting strange… they were dancing! He concluded the reason they were acting in this manner was because of some berries they had eaten. He shared the berries with a monk who made a drink from the berries and noticed they allowed him to stay up all night and meditate. Another legend says the monks were upset at using the berries and threw them into a fire, where they produced a pleasing aroma and was the first roasted coffee. After this they were ground and boiled to make what we know today as coffee. Legends are amazing indeed!

Whatever you believe, there is no doubt that coffee has had an impact on the world over the centuries and continues to be a favorite of many people.

I hope you enjoyed this story and as always, thank you for all of you do to provide safe food for our families, each and every Day!
