Food Safety Focus | Happy Walnut Day!

Hello All Team Members!

I hope this message finds all of you and your families safe and well,

Happy Walnut Day to all fans of the walnut, far and wide!  Anyone with a nut allergy will need to stay at a safe distance because today we celebrate the walnut!  That’s right, American President Dwight Eisenhower declared May17th as National Walnut Day back in 1958, but this wasn’t the first time the walnut was declared a valuable part of a healthy diet.

Some say walnuts are the oldest tree food known to people, with a history as chief source of nutrition dating back to thousands of years BC.  Archaeologists claim to have found walnut shells from as far back as 9000 years ago.  They were also found in the ruins of Pompeii, which means they made their way to Southern Italy by at least a few thousand years ago.  The Romans called the walnut Juglans regia or “Jupiter’s royal acorn” and it has been known to sustain entire populations in times of need.

What we call today the “English” walnut actually came from Persia where they were reserved and eaten by royalty.  Traders and merchants brought the Persian walnut to England where the name changed to the English walnut.  Just about all the marketable walnuts on the market today are the Persian walnut.

Since the walnut easily adapts to any temperate climate, they were brought to California in the late 1700’s by Franciscan Fathers who called them “Mission” walnuts.  By the 1800’s there were crops of them being cultivated in America and now the United Sates exports more walnuts than any other country in the world, with around 99% of them coming from Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys.

Since the walnut resembled a brain in the way it was shaped, it was believed they helped the mind.  People were told to eat walnuts as a way of promoting mental health even back to the middle ages and farther.  Today we know them to help with more than just a healthy brain but also heart health, healthy aging, weight control, a healthy gut and more.

Thank you for taking a closer look at the walnut with me today and as always thank you so much for all you do to provide safe food for our families each and every Day!
