Food Safety Focus | Who is Responsible for Food Safety?

Food Safety Focus

Hello All!

I hope this message finds all of you and your families safe and well.

This week I want to discuss who is responsible for food safety: All of us!

Food safety is everyone’s responsibility.  As a company, we will not be able to have a healthy food safety perspective without each team member knowing this to be true.  It’s easy to walk by something you know to be wrong or take short cuts when there’s no ownership, so it’s important to keep this in mind.

As I’ve said before, our food safety culture is in how we treat the food products in our care all of the time, when we think people are watching and when we think, no one is watching.  How much we care is in the steps we are willing to take to ensure everything that passes through our hands reflects the quality we would want for ourselves and for our own families.  A healthy food safety culture is vital in every area of the process from farm to table in whatever role along the way we have.  We are all included in the food safety culture of our company and all of us play an important role.

I’m thankful that we have a strong food safety culture in the Burris family.  All of us want to give good, healthy food to our families and friends and we have the opportunity to have a direct impact in making sure this happens each day.

Friendly Reminder – As I discussed with you a few months ago, currently there are 8 major categories of allergens in the U.S. – Milk, Eggs, Fish, Crustacean Shellfish (like Shrimp and Lobster), Wheat, Soybeans (Soy), Peanuts and Tree Nuts but this will change January 1st 2023 as Sesame Seeds will be added as the ninth major allergen group.  This is important to remember since products received now may not ship out for months.  Products that contain sesame seeds will not be able to be sold after January 1st 2023 unless the products are correctly labeled and could be a part of a recall if not.

Thank you for all that you do each and every day to ensure safe food for our families!
