Food Safety Focus | National Hotdog Day

Food Safety Focus –

Hello All Team Members!

I hope this message finds all of you and your families safe and well,

National Hotdog Day falls on the 3rd Wednesday of July, each year in the U.S.  On this day, like on many other days, hotdogs will be enjoyed by a lot of its fans, piled high with everything that makes them just right for each person’s taste.  And speaking of fans, where is the one place the hot dog seems to be enjoyed the most?

For many of the masses, the best place to have a hotdog is in a baseball stadium.  Hotdogs and baseball go way back to the 1800s.  Legend says that European immigrant Chris Von de Ahe introduced hotdogs to hungry fans in the mid-1800s at the ballpark he built after he bought the St Louis Browns.  Legend says and that he even coined the phrase “fan” short for “fanatic”.

Hotdogs were originally sold without the bun.  White gloves were handed out instead, to help hold your hotdog and stay clean.  There are stories that claim the hotdog was served in ballparks with bread by the 1890s, even before the invention of the hotdog bun in 1904.

No matter how they started, all through the 1900s until today, hotdogs and baseball have gone hand in hand for players and “fans” alike.  The Great Bambino Babe Ruth was said to have once eaten at least a dozen hotdogs between the two games of a double header.

I sincerely hope you enjoyed this fun serving of food history and as always thank you for all you do to provide safe food for our families each and every Day!
