Food Safety Focus | Pest Control

Hello All,

I hope this message finds all of you safe and well.

This food safety focus will be about pest prevention and ways that help keep pests out of the warehouse and away from products stored there.

Make sure all exterior doors are fitted with self-closing devices, to make them shut automatically when you let go of the door. Never prop doors open or hold them open for too long. Holding doors open makes it easy for pests to get in.

When bringing in stacks of empty pallets from a pallet company or a carrier for pallet exchange, make sure we are inspecting the stacks of pallets brought in. Many times, a pallet company is not overly concerned with pest prevention, since they’re storing pallets and not food products. Some pallet companies even store their pallets outside! If you see even traces of pest infestation on pallets, like droppings, etc., these pallets must be taken out of service immediately and never used in the warehouse.

No eating or drinking in the warehouse. Some sites have allowances for water bottles in the warehouse. If so, this should be only water in its original, clear bottle and with a screw top lid.

Holes in screens should be no larger than 1/4 inch.

All sites should be using the services of a licensed pest control provider, to assist with making sure you have the right program in place for your site. They will make sure you have the correct amount of exterior bait stations and inside traps for the area you are in.

Thanks for all you do every Day,

Justin
Food Safety Manager
