Food Safety Focus | Allergen Update – Sesame Seeds

I hope this message finds all of you and your families safe and well.

This food safety focus will focus on a new allergen that was added to the “Big Eight” as a major food category in the U.S starting January 1st 2023 – Sesame Seeds!  This new allergen addition was signed into law early last year 2021 as part of the FASTER Act and will take effect in only a handful of months.

Let’s start with learning what the eight-major food allergens are Milk, Eggs, Fish, Crustacean Shellfish (like Shrimp and Lobster), Wheat, Soybeans (Soy), Peanuts and Tree Nuts and now, starting January 1st 2023, Sesame Seeds will be added as the ninth major allergen group.

As many of you know, allergens have to be listed on the labels of food products that contain allergens or may have been potentially exposed to allergens, as in the case of a production line that handles multiple allergenic products. This labeling requirement is needed to protect anyone who has an allergy and may not be aware that a particular allergen is in the food they want to eat.

Now we have added sesame seeds to the list starting January 1st 2023 and all labels of products containing sesame seeds will have to comply with this new rule.  Seems like this is the customer’s problem you may say?  You may change your mind if we are stuck with products in our care that we cannot ship due to labeling issues.  How long products are in our care before shipping may vary according to what the products are and the shelf life they have but improperly labeled products in our care after this deadline will not be able to be shipped and could be part of a recall.  This is good to keep in the back of our minds, as we get closer to the January 1st 2023 deadline.

Thanks, for all that you do every Day!
