Hello All!

Food Safety Focus

Hello All!

I hope this message finds all of you and your families safe and well.

This Food Safety Focus will focus on chemicals.

We use many types of chemicals to keep our warehouses clean and running smoothly and the proper usage and storage of those chemicals is always important.  You may ask, “Why can’t I just leave them out, since we’re not a production facility”?  Rest assured, it is still very important to control chemicals properly, even in a storage and distribution only environment.  Many of the products we handle, even in storage and distribution, still have the potential to become exposed to chemicals and become contaminated, if we are not careful.

Cleaning chemicals should always be locked away in a storage closet or stored in an area with controlled access.  This is to prevent unauthorized people from using the chemical and to ensure all chemicals are stored in the proper areas.  Please put chemicals back where they go immediately after we are done using them and not later.

Some chemicals, like many aerosol cleaners and lubricants used by maintenance, for example can be explosive and must be locked away in a fireproof cabinet for security and safety.

Always dispose of chemicals and their containers properly.  No chemical should ever be placed in a dumpster or trash compactor, except for bleach for the purposes of denaturing disposed products and for odor control.  Never pour any chemicals into drains or allow them to be washed into any drains, unless they are designed to be done so.  Always use the proper PPE, or Personal Protective Equipment, when using any chemical.  Look in the SDS or Safety Data Sheets for any chemical being used before it’s brought into a facility, to ensure it is being stored, used and disposed of correctly.  The SDS will contain everything you need to know about the chemical and must be followed at all times.  Please see you manager or supervisor for the location of the SDSs of every chemical being used at your facility, if you have any questions.  Everyone has a right to know what chemicals are being used around them and the potential affects that chemical could have on themselves and the environment.

Thanks, for all that you do every Day!
